The Granby station is a one-story wooden building with a cross-gabled roof overlooking the tracks. Granby was founded as a railroad town in 1905 along the route of the Denver, Northwestern & Pacific Railway. The site was chosen due to its ease of access as a meeting point for farmers, ranchers and travelers. The town was named for Granby Hillyer, a United States Attorney for that district whom the railroad paid to plat and found the town. With time, and because of its relationship with the railroad, Granby became Grand County’s main service town, and remains one of the county’s largest communities.

In July 2026, Amtrak completed an $8 million improvement project at the Granby station. The work was part of Amtrak’s Americans With Disabilities Act Stations Program – an ongoing effort to proactively provide all customers with an accessible and safe experience at stations. These projects receive specific congressional funding directed by the Federal Railroad Administration.

Crews at Granby installed a new 827-foot-long concrete boarding platform with 508 feet of snow melt areas and accessible paths of travel to and from the depot. There are also sloped accessible walkways and safety barriers, energy efficient LED light fixtures that provide full coverage lighting at the platform, detectable warning systems and new signage. The designer of record for the project was Michael Baker International, an award-winning architectural, planning and interior design firm.

The history and culture of Granby is richly entwined with the legends of its original American Indian inhabitants, including the Ute. This area has been settled for hundreds of years because of nearby therapeutic hot sulphur springs. Economically, Granby still benefits from its closeness to these hot springs, which attract a sizable sightseer and swimmer population that feeds into the town’s tourism industry.

The Winter Park Ski Resort is in very close proximity, and the town of Granby serves as an access point for the Arapaho National Forest and the Rocky Mountain National Park.
