The Tomah depot is a wooden structure built by the Chicago, Milwaukee and St. Paul Railroad (Milwaukee Road) in the early 1900s and is very typical of depot design of that period.
In November 2025, Amtrak and local officials gathered at the station to cut the ribbon on completion of a $5 million improvement project at the facility. The work was part of Amtrak’s Americans With Disabilities Act Stations Program – an ongoing effort to proactively provide all customers with an accessible and safe experience at stations.
Crews constructed a new 330-foot-long heated concrete boarding platform and accessible paths of travel to and from the depot and a designated parking area. They also installed sloped walkways, railings, energy efficient LED light fixtures, detectable warning systems and new signage. In addition, upgrades were completed on the waiting room air conditioning and public utility connections. The designer of record for the project was Michael Baker International, an internationally recognized architecture and engineering firm that specializes in infrastructure and transportation.
There is a large Amish population around Tomah; therefore, it is not uncommon to see a horse and buggy parked outside the depot waiting for the arrival of the train.
The Borealis is financed primarily through funds made available by the Minnesota, Wisconsin and Illinois Departments of Transportation.
