• City of Fort Morgan

The Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad built the one-story brick and stucco Fort Morgan depot in the 1920s. In its day it was said to have been constructed for beauty as well as service, and most of the interior is original.

In July 2026, Amtrak completed a $7 million improvement project at the facility. The work was part of Amtrak’s Americans With Disabilities Act Stations Program – an ongoing effort to proactively provide all customers with an accessible and safe experience at stations. These projects receive specific congressional funding directed by the Federal Railroad Administration.

Crews at Fort Morgan installed new 480- and 600-foot-long concrete platforms with accessible paths of travel to and from the depot. There are also sloped accessible walkways and safety barriers, energy efficient LED light fixtures that provide full coverage lighting at the platform, detectable warning systems and new signage. The designer of record for the project was Linn Architects.

Fort Morgan was built as a military outpost by the federal government in 1864. The troops stationed there protected stagecoaches and pioneers traveling the Overland Trail until 1870 when the fort was dismantled. It had been named in honor of Colonel Christopher A. Morgan, and the name became permanent when the city was founded in 1884. The community grew in the 20th century with some oil discoveries. Glenn Miller, the big band leader, formed his first ensemble in this city.
