History

The Naperville station was built in 1910 by the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy Railroad (now BNSF Railway). Today Amtrak shares this facility with Metra and it is the primary stop for Chicago’s western suburbs.

As part of the monies distributed to Amtrak under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2010, the Naperville depot received a new wheelchair lift and enclosure in 2011 at an estimated cost of $14,000.

Established in 1831 by Captain Joseph Naper, Naperville’s first growth surge began in 1864 when the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy Railroad ran its line through Naperville. The town remained largely a rural community for many decades until the construction of the Ronald Reagan Memorial Tollway (I-88) and the North–South Tollway (I-355), when the population almost quadrupled and more corporate headquarters began relocating to the suburbs.

In 2006, CNN/ Money and Money Magazine ranked Naperville #2 on its list of the l00 best places to live in the United States.

Naperville has the distinction of having removed parking meters in the mid-1970s. Special taxing districts were established to provide the revenue stream lost from the meters. Short-term parking is free in garages built in the 1980s and 1990s. The central business district is a five-minute walk from the station.

Naperville is served by eight daily trains. The intrastate trains are primarily financed through funds made available by the Illinois Department of Transportation.

This facility has a waiting room and is staffed by an Amtrak employee.
