Since the extension of Downeaster Service to Freeport and Brunswick, Maine in November 2012, local businesses close to the new stations have reported increased retail activity from rail passengers. The Freeport station is within easy walking distance of dozens of popular outlet and specialty stores along Main Street that make the town a regional shopping destination. In Brunswick, the passenger rail station was built as part of a larger, mixed-use development containing a hotel, stores and office space nestled between downtown and the campus of Bowdoin College.
