Amtrak Social Media recently launched a contest asking riders to tag their favorite Amtrak station photos on Instagram using the hashtag #AmtrakStations.

These photos are just one instance of how train stations can come to mean a lot to people—stations are where we depart for new adventures, welcome friends and family into loving arms and recall the history that shapes our towns and grounds us to a place we call “home.”

Stations can take on many roles beyond transportation—a renovated or preserved station can be an anchor for economic development, catalyst for historic preservation and tourism, site for commercial and cultural uses such as museums and a point of civic pride that helps a community put its best foot forward.
