Civic Conversations

Passenger rail stations greatly benefit the communities they serve, welcome visitors and function as connection points to other public transportation. They also have the potential to spark greater economic opportunities in the heart of communities. Amtrak is undertaking an effort to develop partnerships with public officials and local communities to rebuild and revitalize the stations we serve as part of the Great American Stations project.

In 2007, we began hosting a series of Civic Conversations with local communities along our routes to enable us to work more closely with local public and private parties to revitalize stations. Discussions include case studies, possible funding sources, Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requirements, and who to contact at Amtrak for assistance in getting started.

To date, we have hosted three successful Civic Conversations in Denver, Pittsburgh and Albuquerque. The next Civic Conversation has been postponed and will be held in Savannah, GA on February 3-4, 2009.
