History

The Granby station is a one-story wooden building overlooking the tracks.

Granby was founded as a railroad town in 1905 along the route of the Denver, Northwestern & Pacific Railway. The site was chosen due to its ease of access as a meeting point for farmers, ranchers and travelers. The town was named for Granby Hillyer, a United States Attorney for that district whom the railroad paid to plat and found the town. With time, and because of its relationship with the railroad, Granby became Grand County’s main service town, and remains one of the county’s largest towns.

The history and culture of Granby is richly entwined with the legends of its former Indian inhabitants. This area has been settled for hundreds of years because of the therapeutic Hot Sulphur Springs nearby that, according to Ute legend, are heated by the fire of an old Indian chief desolately awaiting the return of his tribesmen. According to the story, the young and foolhardy braves left, despite the elder’s warnings, on a reckless and ill-fated mission of glory, and the elderly chief remains there by his fire awaiting their return to this day. Economically, Granby still benefits from its closeness to this and other hot springs, which attract a sizable sightseer and swimmer population that feeds into the town’s tourism industry.

The Winter Park Ski Resort is in very close proximity and the town of Granby serves as an access point for the Arapaho National Forest and the Rocky Mountain National Park.

Amtrak does not provide ticketing or baggage services at this facility. A caretaker opens and closes the station.

Granby is served by two daily trains.
