History
The Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad (CB&Q, now BNSF Railway) built the one-story brick and stucco Fort Morgan depot in the 1920s. In its day it was said to have been constructed for beauty as well as service. Most of the interior is original and recently painted.
The original Fort Morgan was built as a military outpost by the federal government in 1864. The troops stationed at the fort acted as a deterrent to large Indian attacks in the area and they protected stagecoaches and pioneers traveling the Overland Trail. The threat passed by 1870, and the fort was dismantled. The fort had been named in honor of Colonel Christopher A. Morgan and the name became permanent when the city of Fort Morgan was founded in 1884. The town grew in the 20th century with some oil discoveries. Glenn Miller, the big band leader, formed his first band in this city.
Amtrak does not provide ticketing or baggage services at this facility.
Fort Morgan is served by two daily trains.
