History
The Chemult station consists of an enclosed shelter at the platform. The Oregon Department of Transportation, in a joint effort with Amtrak and Klamath County, is planning to build a new Train Station/Welcome Center to replace the existing structure with a permanent building; provide restroom facilities; build a new ADA compliant platform, new ramp and curb cut between parking area and platform; new accessible parking spaces; and construct an information kiosk for passengers at the station and travelers on U.S. 97, which passes directly by the station. This project is expected to be completed by late 2010. The Chemult station has received $125,000 in grant money, together with $387,000 from a federal program and $25,000 in local support.
Chemult was established in 1924 as a station stop for the Southern Pacific Railroad’s Cascade Line. During construction it was known as "Knott." The station’s name was changed to Chemult when the line opened and a post office was established in 1926. The name comes from a Klamath chief who was one of the 26 who signed the Klamath Lake Treaty of October 14, 1864.
Chemult lies southeast of Eugene, in a high rugged region about 30 miles north of Crater Lake. The area is well-known for hiking, snowmobiling, cross-country skiing, fishing, hunting, and dog-sled racing. Chemult offers annual dog-sled races where competitors vie for cash prizes.
Amtrak does not provide ticketing or baggage services at this station.
Chemult is served by two daily trains.
